Yesterday on the radio there was the inevitable speculation about whether we were in a recession or not. 17,000 jobs lost in January, when a small rise in employment had been predicted. An increasing rate of foreclosures. But still, nobody can say for certain.

At least Wall Street, they said, appeared happy, boosted by ExxonMobile's announcement January 30th of the largest ever profits by an American company, ever.

Exxon Mobil made history on Friday by reporting the highest quarterly and annual profits ever for a U.S. company, boosted in large part by soaring crude prices.

Exxon, the world's largest publicly traded oil company, said fourth-quarter net income rose 14% to $11.66 billion, or $2.13 per share.
