brni (brni) wrote,

she wore a vest and a hat...

...and she moved like a dancing spider, all arms and legs and guitar, and when her E-string broke, she spun it around like a feather boa. The last time I paid attention to Michelle Shocked was when Short Sharp Shocked was getting airplay, and I decided that while I liked some of the songs, it wasn't compelling enough to shell out for the album. (I wish I'd had the foresight to fail to buy a Billy Bragg album, but nobody's perfect.)

Tonight, she whooped and yeehawed and "y'all"ed her way into my CD collection. She's grown stylistically over the years, from the texas-folk-punk of the 80s to jazz and gospel, melding them effortlessly. For someone who is all arms and legs, she has an impressive set of lungs. *grin* The song that won us completely was Little Billie, a song about a New Orleans funeral. Linda was wiping her eyes by the end. Me? Not so much, 'cause, y'know, I'm manly 'n shit.

She was also very sweet and personable, engaging each person sincerely as we waited our turn to meet her and get our CD's signed.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for future shows.
