Does anyone know what the legality is of using Orcs (as a species)? I know that Mary Gentle used them in Grunts, and of course, they appear prominently in AD&D. Has the term Orc become enough into public domain that the Tolkien estate doesn't contest it's usage? Or are people obtaining permission from the Tolkien estate?
