I learned today that the drive-thru for the McDonald's in Redmond, VA (that RAS used to frequent when he lived out there) is outsourced. It apparently goes to the same call center that Switch & Data uses. The McDonald's is connected via T1 to the call center, somebody at the remote location speaks with you and takes your order, enters it on the computers, and then the people at the McDonald's assemble your order and hand it to you when you drive to the pickup window.
Seems that when the circuit goes down, mass confusion results.
We learned this because Avi commented on how clear the sound was, and how understandable the woman who took our order was.
