welcome to the age of spectacle

I’ve been reading J.G.Ballard’s User’s Guide to the Millennium, which is a collection of his essays and reviews and musings from the early sixties to the late nineties. I’ve been struck by his extensive references to Hiroshima and Disneyland, and it occurs to me that these things mean something very different to this man who was born in Shanghai and spent his teens in a Japanese internment camp during than it does to me, who was born in the US after he’d published his first novel.

So I’m curious: what comes to mind when you think of these two phenomena? Assuming that you’re answering this, and that others have answered, please don’t read what others have written before writing your own response.
